At the advent of the New Year, we have the opportunity to reflect upon the events of 2008. The past year has seen many economic and political changes, such as the financial and food crisis, and the United States and Canadian general elections. Everyone has felt the impact of these global issues. In Switzerland, we had to face the UBS crisis.
In accordance with these changing times, the Swiss administration must rise to new challenges and implement new policies. The referendum of February 8th is one of these policies. The Swiss citizens have the opportunity to decide the fate of free access to the job market for the Bulgarians and the Rumanians. As Swiss expatriates, we understand the issues of the global economy. The Swiss Christian Democrats recommend approving the referendum in order to improve our economy and our European presence. It is time to express strong support and conviction for an ambitious policy with the European Union. It is time to think about the future generation, and to face the reality of the economic crisis. Our projects for 2009 aim to raise awareness of political issues at home and abroad.
It was with great enthusiasm and success that we started our program last year, and we are looking forward to carrying that momentum into the future. We will inform you of our next development soon. Happy New Year to our families, and all the best to the Swiss Christian Democrats!
The elections are over. Senator Obama will be the 44th President. As Swiss, how can we analyze this success after two years of a long campaign? Well, there are a lot of new aspects we can work on. I would like to share with you what I experienced during this campaign. It started for me when I saw Hillary Clinton campaigning at Boston University in October 2007. I got the impression that she was very good at being a politician; however, she didn’t translate to the crowd her slogans and enthusiasm.
Two weeks later, I attended a fundraising event for Senator Obama. Even though, we were only 800 people, mostly younger than 30, their enthusiasm was very present. Was it only an isolated phenomenon? A lot of experienced democrats I met told me that they haven’t seen enthusiasm like this since Bob Kennedy’s campaign in 1968. These guys were right! I found out firsthand on the evening before Super Tuesday when Barack Obama finished his campaign in Boston. It was amazing to see so many people in line for two hours to listen to speeches from Governor Patrick and Senators Kennedy and Kerry. I will never forget this rally with so many young people.
I was thinking how difficult it is for our Swiss party to attract young volunteers. Politics is great when a great movement brings new ideas. The future is ours if we act together. After long primaries, Senators Obama and McCain were the finalists. I had the opportunity to meet several volunteers for both candidates. All of them believed their candidates would change Washington. Then, Governor Palin appeared in a rally in New Hampshire. I attended this event with curiosity. I wasn’t disappointed because she was electrical. Everything seemed close. The polls were tight. Finally, Election Day arrived. I had the chance to stay in Chicago because the Swiss television channel, TSR, invited me to participate in some interviews. To be at Grant Park this day, with 250,000 people, and the new President was absolutely: yes, we can! Tramadol Hcl-acetaminophen Par Information

This is a great time to be in America. What a great experience to see how American citizens are involved in their elections. We met a lot of people working with the Obama or McCain campaigns and we attended several political events in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Ohio. Having the opportunity to share our ideas in a friendly environment, we were able to discuss our Christian democratic philosophy and see how it fits real policies for the future. We are very impressed by the motivation of both candidates’ volunteers. We are so happy to share our passion in politics; it is true that we face a lot of common challenges in economics, education, and the environment. From our experience, it is amazing to observe the organization, the logistics, the innovative marketing tools, and the slogans used in this campaign. We can learn that our political culture is totally different in Switzerland.
Living in an uncertain world doesn’t mean that we have to stop thinking about our future. We have decided to intensify our relationships with our American counterparts. Not only have the diplomatic and economic relations had to be improved, but also the political ones. We are proud to be part of this process for the coming years.
Change is part of our culture!
We wish all the best for the next president of the United States.
After six months of intensive work, we have improved our presence in North America. Last May, we decided to launch a new way of doing politics. Taking advantage of the internet, we had the opportunity to launch the first web 2.0 site for a political party. Since the spring, we have collected opinions, ideas, and suggestions. We are very proud that our Swiss who live in America have a lot of interest in domestic policies. Not only are the people who were born in our country, enthusiastic to share their views with the representatives of our party, but also Swiss from the second generation. These Swiss expatriates want to support us in order to shake the politicians in Bern. They want to be part of an innovative project dedicated to the best of our country! We appreciate the deep discussions; we love sharing our ideas and programs.
When we established our party in North America, we didn’t realize that we would be able to achieve a certain level of collaborative intelligence. What a great tool for the future of our country. We also want to thank the American political leaders who were very happy to welcome us. Switzerland and the USA are the sister republics. We belong to the same family and we understand each other very well. It is a great advantage for us to expand our network with the Democrats and the Republicans. It is a great time to be part of the political process right now!
The world is changing very rapidly. The Swiss Christian Democrats are ready to face with the next challenges in economics, politics, education and the environment. Because we have a transatlantic overview, we can expand the ideas and proposals that our countries need.
Join us! Be part of the next generation of the fifth Switzerland!
Everybody can remember what he or she was doing when it occured these terrorist attacks.
Everybody felt like an
American, because it was an attack against our civilisation.
For all people who lost someone on September 11, 2001, we want to say that we will never forget.
God bless America!
Twenty years after Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev broke the ice in Geneva, a Swiss diplomat who organised that historic summit recalls the event.
To mark the anniversary, Edouard Brunner attended a roundtable discussion, along with former Soviet premier Gorbachev, on Monday.
As secretary of state for foreign affairs in the 1980s, Brunner was asked by the United States to organise the historic summit. It took place from November 19-21, 1985.
At the time relations between the two superpowers were at their worst for many years. In 1983 the late Ronald Reagan gave his famous "evil empire" speech, describing the Soviet Union as "the focus of evil" in the world.
In the same year, the US deployed mid-range missiles in western Europe for the first time. The Soviets responded by walking out of arms control talks in Geneva.
The Geneva Summit was the first time that Reagan and Gorbachev - recently risen to the top of Communist Party - had met, and it marked the beginning of a thaw in relations between Washington and Moscow.
Its purpose was to open the way for negotiations on curbing nuclear proliferation, and by the end of the meeting both sides had agreed to accelerate efforts towards a 50 per cent cut in their nuclear arsenals.
Several of the key players will be present to mark the anniversary, including the former Soviet foreign minister, Alexander Bessmertnikh, and Reagan’s former national security advisor, Robert McFarlane.
Is it correct to say that the meeting marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War?Edouard Brunner: Yes, I think you could say that. Both men had convinced themselves that it was useless to go on like this. But on the other hand, they had constituencies at home that were not so easy to handle. Gorbachev had to convince his Politburo that he could do business with Reagan.
[The timing was good because] when Gorbachev came to power there was a ray of hope because for the first time we had a leader in the Soviet Union who was apparently ready to act in a decisive way as far as détente was concerned.
On the other side you had Reagan who was a hawk, but who was intelligent enough to see that he could perhaps put an end to the Cold War. And I think it was Margaret Thatcher who convinced Reagan that he could talk to Gorbachev. That is how it started in June [1985].
You personally met Reagan and Gorbachev. Did they get on as famously as we were led to believe?E.B.: Our president Kurt Furgler insisted on having a one-on-one with Gorbachev and Reagan for one hour before the talks started. Apparently, at the beginning it was not so warm between them.
The first day, according to Edvard Shevardnadze, whom I met in Georgia, Gorbachev was ready to leave because he didn’t feel at ease with Reagan.
But I think Mrs Gorbachev and Shevardnadze convinced him [to stay]. So the talks went on and in the end they had a good meeting and apparently they liked each other so much that they met some months later in Reykjavik [Iceland].
What role did Switzerland, and you yourself, play in organising that meeting?E.B.: I was approached by the American negotiator who was in Geneva for disarmament talks with the Soviets, to find out if we were ready to organise a meeting between Reagan and Gorbachev. We had to see to the security, to organise every detail – to find accommodation, meeting places, and so on. Let’s say we organised it in a non-political way.
« Everybody knows that Switzerland does not have national interests to defend.»
These days Geneva rarely seems to host such high-profile talks. Why?
E.B.: At the time of the Cold War, we were a neutral country in Europe... and we had a role to play among the [conflicting] parties. That was in the tradition of Geneva. But now neutrality is not needed in this context [because we no longer have a bipolar world].
Today there are plenty of other countries which are as neutral as we are between parties. Take the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, take Darfur [Sudan], take Iran. Even when Bush
Kurt Furgler, a former government minister, has died at the age of 84 after suffering from heart failure.
His family announced that Furgler - a 15-year member of cabinet - passed away in St Gallen, the city of his birth, on Wednesday.
He is considered one of the most brilliant political figures in post-war Swiss history.
Born in 1924, Furgler studied law and went on to become a prominent lawyer. He was elected to parliament at the age of 30 and joined cabinet in 1972.
The centre Christian Democrat was justice minister for ten years before taking over the economics ministry for the rest of his tenure in government.
He held the rotating post of Swiss president three times.
Furgler had a reputation as a reformer. He brought about changes to adoption laws and legislation concerning children and marriage, as well as the acceptance of the constitutional article enshrining equal rights for men and women.
He was also known for a piece of legislation, which restricted property purchases by foreigners.
He was a noted diplomat and is familiar to the international community as the man who welcomed US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Union head of state and Communist Party leader Mikhail Gorbachev to Geneva in November 1985, a meeting that signaled an end to the Cold War between the superpowers. Furgler also fought to have Switzerland join the European Union and pushed to increase Switzerland’s involvement in the international community.
In paying tribute to Furgler, Swiss President Pascal Couchepin said he had always been impressed by the "clarity and exactness of his thinking".

If there's a star candidate for Vision Vancouver, it's Gregor Robertson.
He's a New Democratic Party MLA with all the right progressive credentials. He's a successful businessman and also looks pretty good in front of the cameras.
"Vancouver is at the most pivotal time, with huge challenges like homelessness and eroding public safety," said Robertson, 43. "But [there are] also massive opportunities, like our green economy and our creative sector."
The Vancouver-Fairview MLA has a 10-year plan to build permanent housing for the homeless, with health supports.
And he wants to put in a speculators' tax for people buying condos for investment.
Robertson also wants to install dedicated bike lanes around the city, protected from traffic. Four per cent of Vancouverites cycle, compared to 36 per cent in Copenhagen.
"The biggest gain we can make is in cycling," said Robertson. "It's all about making cycling safe."
Robertson wants to give the police the resources they need, and offer more treatment and detox services to reduce drug addiction.
Vancouver should follow the examples of Berlin and Montreal, he said, and create special zoning for artist studio space and commercial space, along with more festivals and more public art.
"Vancouver should be known around the world for its creative capacity," he said.
Robertson is not doing polling, but said he has signed up more than 5,000 members.
His broad umbrella of endorsers include NPA school trustee Eleanor Gregory, Vision Vancouver Coun. Heather Deal and Paul Faoro, Local 15 president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
"The vast majority of Vancouverites don't want partisan politics at the city level," he said.
As a Vision mayor, he would bring the Coalition of Progressive Electors and the Greens into a "majority coalition."
"We figure out how to work constructively together, without physically uniting," he said.
Robertson said he also wants more citizen involvement in decision-making.
Pegged as a future NDP leader, Robertson said he's never seen politics as a long-term career.
"I thought of it as doing years of public service," he said. "I can only focus
on what looms large ahead of me, which is putting all my energy into being the
mayor of Vancouver."
P2008 - DEMS. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both landed significant super-delegate endorsements on Monday -- but Clinton's was definitely more significant, in light of the upcoming NC primary next week. North Carolina Governor Mike Easley threw his support behind Clinton, and US Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) endorsed Obama. New Mexico already voted. Dr. Jeremiah Wright -- Obama's former pastor -- also is aggressively pushing himself back into the headlines via a series of speeches and press conferences. Wright, who sounded rather jealous of the positive attention lavished on Obama's recent race speech, seems intent on making incendiary comments intended to generate headlines. Obama, in response, seems to be further distancing himself from his controversial retired pastor. Here are the latest primary polls:
INDIANA (WCPO-TV/SurveyUSA): Clinton - 52%, Obama - 43%.
NORTH CAROLINA (PPP): Obama - 51%, Clinton - 39%.
NORTH CAROLINA (ARG): Obama - 52%, Clinton - 42%.
P2008 - GOP. Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) told CNN he has no plans to campaign this fall in support of John McCain. "There’s not much difference between the three [McCain, Clinton and Obama]," said Paul. When asked if he would campaign for McCain, Paul answered: "Probably not, not unless he changes his tune -- like bring the troops home." Despite these comments, Paul insists he is being a very loyal Republican: "Maybe you are a good Republican if you stand up for Republican principles. I would argue that leadership in the last few years has drifted from the Republican principles. More bureaucracy, more regulations, more entitlements, policing the world, but that is not what we stand for. I would say that our position is very much in tune with being a good Republican."
Barack Obama held an impromptu press conference today to explain that he can’t be held responsible for the things Rev. Wright might say. “I have said before and I will repeat again that some of the comments that Reverend Wright has made offend me and I understand why they’ve offended the American people,” Obama told reporters. “He does not speak for me. He does not speak for the campaign and so he may make statements in the future that don’t reflect my values or concerns,” Obama said. Then he added, “I think certainly what the last three days indicate is that we’re not coordinating with him.” Obama really didn’t like it that Rev. Wright hinted that Obama tells us what we want to hear just to get elected. “What particularly angered me was his suggestion somehow that my previous denunciation of his remarks were somehow political posturing,” Obama said. He was referring to Rev. Wright saying, “If Obama did not say what he said, he wouldn’t get elected.” Obama later added, “He’s obviously free to speak his mind, but I just want to emphasis he is my former pastor. Many of the statements he made both to trigger this initial controversy, and that he’s made over the last couple days are not statements that I heard him make previously. They don’t represent my views and they don’t represent what this campaign is about. But he’s obviously free to make those statements.” Since Obama has apparently gone to this church for about 20 years, this would be like Hillary Clinton making a speech announcing she just found out Bill Clinton cheated on her. Is he just saying this because he is a politician, or does he mean it this time?
The Fifth Switzerland designates the set of Swiss nationals living abroad the national territory. The term fifth is a reference to the four official linguistic communities (German, French, Italian and Romansh) within the national territory.
The expatriates represent more than 600,000 people in the world. Their interests are defended by the Organization of the Swiss Abroad (www.aso.ch). The Swiss community represents about 72,000 in the United States and about 37,000 in Canada. No Swiss political party has established a structure for these important communities. We are very delighted to be the pioneers!
This section will display specific issues of the Swiss living in North America.
The Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged Tuesday for the fourth straight time as worries about inflation continued to trump concerns about the slowing economy, the Associated Press reported. At its final meeting of 2006, the central bank left its target for the federal funds rate at 5.25 percent. The funds rate, the interest that banks charge each other, has been at that level since June, when the Fed raised rates for the 17th consecutive time in a two-year effort to combat rising inflation. The decision means that banks' prime lending rate, the benchmark for millions of consumer and business loans, will remain unchanged at 8.25 percent. (Compiled by CongressDailyPM, Dec. 12)

Education in the United States is provided mainly by government, with control and funding coming from three levels: federal, state, and local. School attendance is mandatory and nearly universal at the elementary and high school levels (often known outside the United States as the primary and secondary levels). At these levels, school curricula, funding, teaching, and other policies are set through locally elected school boards with jurisdiction over school districts. School districts are usually separate from other local jurisdictions, with independent officials and budgets. Educational standards and standardized testing decisions are usually made by state governments.
The ages for compulsory education vary by state, beginning at ages five to eight and ending at the ages of fourteen to eighteen.[2] A growing number of states are now requiring school attendance until the age of 18.
